The Safer Neighbourhood Team work with Trading Standards in Newport...

Illegal Tobacco and Cigarettes Seized Following Community Concerns in Newport…

Concerns raised by residents about the Golden Vape Shop on Upper Bar, Newport, have led to enforcement action led by Telford & Wrekin Council's Trading Standards Department and supported by the Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Following a series of visits to the premises and test purchase operations, officers seized 4,120 illicit cigarettes and approximately 3.1 kilograms of illegal tobacco from the business.

As part of a joint effort with the property's landlord, action was taken to evict the tenant, preventing the business from continuing to operate from the premises.

Councillor Nathan England, Telford & Wrekin Council's Cabinet Member for Safer Streets, welcomed the outcome, stating that the sale of illegal tobacco products "undermines legitimate businesses, deprives public services of vital tax revenue and can help fund wider criminal activity."

The enforcement activity forms part of an ongoing commitment by local partners to tackle concerns raised by residents and businesses and to address criminality that impacts local communities.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team will continue to work closely with Trading Standards and other partner agencies to investigate reports of illegal trading and protect residents from unlawful business practices.

Anyone with concerns about businesses selling illegal tobacco or other illicit goods is encouraged to report the matter to Telford & Wrekin Council or West Mercia Police.
